Abstract

Aim and purpose: Dental caries is a prevalent yet preventable disease in children which causes adverse effects on the quality of nourishment and growth of the baby. The purpose of this study was to determine the DMFT of the first permanent molar in 9 year old public school students of Sari in 1397. Material and Method: In this analytical-descriptive study, three hundred and fifty (350) 9 year old girl and boy elementary-school students were selected randomly. DMFT of the first permanent molar was evaluated and a clinical questionnaire regarding caries was filled. The results of this study were evaluated using Independent sample T and Mann-Whitney test. Results: In this study, DMFT regarding to the first permanent molar in 9 year old Saravi children was calculated. 350 children were included in this study: 175 (50%) boys and 175 (50%) girls. The prevalence of DMFT in boys was 1.48 ±0.8 and 1.51 ± 0.7 in girls with 80.7% decayed, 6.2% missing and 13.1% filled teeth. Conclusion: This study showed that although the DMFT in 9 year old Saravi children was close to WHO's standards yet decayed teeth made up most of the DMFT of the studied population.
